Words from my Grandfather broke the silence with very clear and load force “You have become a strong young man Grandson”.
“Grandfather why are you here?” I ask
“You have questioned the direction of your life and I felt your tears as you ask for answers. I have shown myself to you to show that you are never alone, I have always been only a prayer away” Grandfather said with a smile. “You have the power to break the rope that ties you to me but deep inside your heart has always been the knowledge that in times of guidance, you will be led to what is right.”
For what seemed to be hours Grandfather and I walked and visited along a very worn path in the meadow as I tried to make our time last forever. I suddenly I wondered what and why was this path in the middle of such a lush meadow. Grandfather answered my wonder without my asking “This path is the path that I have walked with my Grandfather and he with his Grandfather, you also will walk this path with your Grandchildren someday. In life I was with you in body in death I am with you in spirit, you didn’t break the rope because in your heart you knew I would protect and guide you.” And with that Grandfather left me with a few words that made me realize everything was going to be right. “I will bring you a new spotted pony.”
On my tenth birthday my Grandfather gave me the best gift I’ve ever received, a spotted pony. That spotted pony became my dearest companion and taught me many lessons including responsibility, patience, independence, humility, grace and freedom just to name a few. My Grandfather knew what this ten year old needed at that time in his life.
When you feel a tug at the end of your rope don’t fight it so much, because maybe just maybe at the end will be your “New Spotted Pony”.
