A little boy and his parents were in the gallery the other day shopping and enjoying the afternoon together. After they spent several minutes in the gallery they brought their purchases to the counter and I started writing the ticket.
“Hey Mister that's pretty cool” the little boy said. “What's cool?” I ask.
“You have your own wishing well in the back of the store.” He said with a smile.
I told him he could use it and yes it is pretty “cool” to have your own wishing well.
After they left the Gallery I gave it some more thought and decided everyone needed their own personal wishing well. Then every time you need to make a wish you just toss a penny in and state your wish. But I got to thinking how often I make wishes and how expensive the habit might become. I find myself wishing all the time, not just wishing I had more stuff but wishing for things like peace, better relationships, more time, warmer weather, forgiveness, grace, and all those things I think would make this world a better place. I started an “in my mind” wish list and then started adding up the tab as I calculated that some wishes should cost more and some should be much less. The “Grand Total” was startling and so I began to cut the list down and trying to decide which wishes were worth the money. So I made a decision that we should all be born with change in our pockets just for wishes and every time we throw in our change magic happens and just like the “bunny in the top hat” more change should appear in our pockets!
I missed a huge opportunity today with that little boy and I'm so sorry. What I should have explained to him is the fact that wishes are really just little prayers, and you certainly don't need to toss a coin to say a prayer. Prayers are free and you can say them any place you get the urge. You can ask for something for yourself or for something for some one else and the price is the same.
So we don't need our own little wishing well because we already have one, our prayers. Now that's “cool” and keep the change!
