It was a beautiful day today, seventy degrees, bright sunshine and just a hint of a breeze. About two years ago I planted some ornamental grasses in my yard and decided it was time to cut down and carry off the dead vegetation to give the new growth room to sprout this coming spring. With my shears I began to cut away the spent grass blades and carry them to the compost pile. I began to realize how much larger the plants had grown since I planted them. As the pile of clippings continued to grow, I started to think about digging up some of the clumps of grasses and separating them into multiple plants to scatter throughout the yard.
We have enjoyed watching the grasses grow with their different colors and textures and also at the end of the season they show a burst of blooming with plumes of seed heads. In winter the snow settles in and on the grasses adding beauty and decoration to the remaining days of the plant. In the beginning I hadn't given too much thought of what the plant would become other than my first intent of filling a void in the yard. Spring will be here in a few days and sprouts of green will appear from the base of roots once again and I'll again enjoy the beauty of the grasses only to find myself next winter cutting away the dead growth of another season.
It reminded me of living life, we gather these things that add beauty to our surroundings and gives us pleasure, then when the season of enjoyment has turned brown we have a yard sale! We also gather the company of people as friends or family and add them to our collection. Then we cultivate and some of these people become less and some become more of our living life.
Sometimes trimming away the old growth adds room for the beauty of tomorrow, don't get me wrong I do find myself mourning the loss of those who become less. But I realize this cycle is continuing in everyone and those who become less in my life also become more in someone else's cycle and the wonder of that is what it does for our lives. Our life must be filled with what feeds our passion, our hope, our dreams of what can be, and our intention happiness. The void that we fill and the void that others fill gives joy to the cycle of life on Mother Earth, I am thrilled at the sight of the green sprouts of new relationships because I know that it feeds the life of the living! We are fed in our spirits by those who add decoration to our lives and brings newness to the adventure of our journey.
